A Line of Defense Hidden Inside the Nose
Scientists had long tried to understand why colder temperatures correlate with colds, flus and other upper respiratory viruses. The discovery of an innate immune response at the front of the nose has provided a missing link to the phenomenon.

CRISPR-Cas9 Genome Editing Treats Genetic Hearing Loss by Promoting Outer Hair Cell Survival
Yong Tao, PhD, Veronica Lamas, PhD, and Zheng-Yi Chen, DPhil, have extended their previous murine research to show CRISPR-associated protein 9 (Cas9)-based genome editing can treat hearing loss associated with monogenic mutations in outer hair cell genes and digenic mutations affecting both inner and outer hair cells.

Knowledge That HPV Can Cause Oropharyngeal Cancer Increases Likelihood of Vaccination
Daniel L. Faden, MD, FACS,and colleagues found only 23% of clinic patients knew there's a relationship between human papillomavirus virus (HPV) infection and oropharyngeal cancer (OPSCC), but those who did know were 3.7 times more likely to be vaccinated against HPV.

Acoustic Resonance Therapy Safe and Effective for Nasal Congestion in Rhinitis
Benjamin S. Bleier, MD, FACS, of Mass Eye and Ear, and colleagues found in a two-week randomized trial that acoustic resonance therapy was significantly more effective than sham therapy for moderate or severe nasal congestion secondary to allergic or non-allergic rhinitis, with a response rate of 81% vs. 46%.

Virally Mediated Gene Therapy Treats Genetic Hearing Loss in Aged Mouse Model
Zheng-Yi Chen, DPhil, and colleagues are the first to demonstrate rescue of genetic hearing loss with a gene therapy delivered by adeno-associated virus in an aged animal model. The study also serves as proof-of-principle that other gene therapies be developed for older adults.

New Biomarker for Cochlear Nerve Degeneration Proposed
Stéphane F. Maison, AuD, PhD, and colleagues used high-pass filtering to isolate a neural spiking component during electrocochleography that correlates with performance on difficult word recognition tasks, used as a proxy for cochlear nerve degeneration.
