A Line of Defense Hidden Inside the Nose
Scientists had long tried to understand why colder temperatures correlate with colds, flus and other upper respiratory viruses. The discovery of an innate immune response at the front of the nose has provided a missing link to the phenomenon.

New Biomarker for Cochlear Nerve Degeneration Proposed
Stéphane F. Maison, AuD, PhD, and colleagues used high-pass filtering to isolate a neural spiking component during electrocochleography that correlates with performance on difficult word recognition tasks, used as a proxy for cochlear nerve degeneration.

DystoniaBoTXNet: Novel AI Model Predicts Botulinum Toxin Efficacy for Individual Patients With Isolated Dystonia
Kristina Simonyan, MD, PhD, Dr med, and colleagues have developed and tested a convolutional neural network, DystoniaBoTXNet, that uses raw structural brain MRI data to provide an objective, accurate and fast prediction of whether botulinum toxin will benefit an individual patient with isolated focal dystonia.

Artificial Intelligence Enters the Ear
Surgeons at Mass Eye and Ear have engineered an artificial intelligence (AI) device that could diagnose a middle ear infection more accurately than a clinician.

Cochlear Motion Across the Reticular Lamina Implies It Is Not a Stiff Plate
Sunil Puria, PhD, and Nam Hyun Cho, PhD, determined in animal model that the reticular lamina within the organ of Corti does not move as a stiff plate near the outer hair cells in the ear but rather might bend or stretch, a finding that has implications for improving understanding of cochlear amplification.
