At the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Annual Meeting, Orhun K. Muratoglu, PhD, director of the Harris Orthopaedics Laboratory and director of the Technology Implementation Research Center (TIRC) at Mass General, discussed with Healio the predictors of periprosthetic acetabular radiolucency progression in metal-on-metal (MoM) hip implants. Periprosthetic osteolysis is the second leading cause of revision in MoM total hip replacement patients.

In this video, Muratoglu comments on his study “Periprosthetic Acetabular Radiolucency Progression in Mid-term Follow-up of the Articular Surface Replacement Hip System,” suggesting that physicians of patients implanted with ASR (articular surface replacement) HRA (hip-resurfacing arthroplasty) implants closely monitor patients with higher chromium levels and lower version angles, as they are at increased risk for osteolytic lesion progression.
