Biography
Dr. Christopher Miller is a fellowship trained foot and ankle surgeon with a particular interest in minimally invasive foot and ankle surgery, total ankle replacement, and limb salvage surgery.
He was raised in New Haven, Connecticut. An avid athlete his whole life, he attended the University of Pennsylvania for undergraduate education where he was a varsity letterman. He graduated with honors and pursued his medical school education at Yale University School of Medicine where he graduated with his MD and a Masters in Health Science. He was active in research throughout his medical school and published on biomechanics and clinic outcomes of fusion procedures.
After finishing his undergraduate medical education, he continued his Orthopaedic Surgery residency training at Yale New Haven Hospital. During this time he found that his true clinical interest lay in the care of complex foot and ankle conditions. He then finished his training at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and the Harvard Foot and Ankle Surgery Fellowship.
Following his fellowship training, he moved to Beth Israel and the New England Baptist Hospital where he practiced for eight years. He is on the faculty of the Harvard Medical School and is active in clinical care, research and teaching. He cares for all aspects of the foot and ankle and is actively involved in limb salvage and amputation prevention efforts for this patients.
He is an internationally recognized expert on minimally invasive surgery (MIS) and arthroscopic surgery for the foot and ankle. He was one of the first two surgeons in Boston to utilize MIS techniques and has rapidly expanded the indications and capabilities of to treat a wide variety of conditions ranging from bunions and hammertoes to complex limb deformity cases as well as sports injuries, Achilles tendon injuries, and ankle instability. Early in his practice, Dr. Miller travelled to Spain multiple times to learn from surgeons in Europe and has brought many of these techniques back to the Boston area. He is particularly interested in MIS and arthroscopic surgery as it has the potential to improve patient outcomes, and decrease post-operative pain, scarring and wound healing complications.
He founded Boston’s first MIS Foot and Ankle Center while at Beth Israel and NEBH in 2019. Since then he has travelled nationally and internationally to teach these complex surgical skills. He has also served as the Division Chief of Foot and Ankle Surgery at BIDMC until his departure in 2024.
In addition to his expertise in MIS, he also extended the role of total ankle replacement surgery within the Harvard hospital networks. One of his primary goals is to facilitate a more rapid recovery and preserve function and motion whenever possible. To that end, his experience with total ankle replacement, and, in particular, complex ankle deformities and revision total ankle has been an exciting addition to his practice. As he continues to work towards improving care for these patients, he has also been able merge these two clinical interests and often is able to use MIS techniques to perform complicated surgeries safely and effectively.
As of August 2024, Dr. Miller has transitioned his practice to the Mass General Brigham network and has rejoined his fellowship mentors at Brigham and Women’s Hospital where he will continue to work towards developing and advancing MIS and arthroscopic foot and ankle surgery, total ankle replacement, and limb salvage cases.
