Orthopedic anesthesiologists at Massachusetts General Hospital provide comprehensive, specialized care for patients undergoing orthopedic procedures. Our team works closely with specialists throughout Mass General, including internists, geriatricians, cardiologists, intensivists, and pain medicine physicians, to optimize the perioperative care rendered to our patients.

We perform over 8,000 orthopedic anesthetic procedures annually, including:

  • Joint arthroplasty
  • Orthopedic oncology
  • Maxillofacial, trauma, and spine surgery

Various regional anesthetic techniques are skillfully utilized to reduce pain and ensure a quick return to mobility after surgery.

2022 Highlights and Accomplishments

Implemented Daily Huddle—This project was developed in collaboration with the orthopedic surgery and nursing leadership team to ensure timely and excellent patient care, a more predictable workflow, and improved team dynamics. We meet every morning to discuss potential challenges of the day, staffing and equipment issues, and adequate placement of waitlist cases. We also review issues encountered the day before to prevent them from happening in the future.

Started the ON-Q Pump Program—This program provides prolonged pain control for day-surgery patients. The program started with the placement of nerve catheters in shoulder surgery patients undergoing outpatient surgery and is now being expanded to other orthopedic surgical specialties.

Improved the Orthopedic Anesthesia Rotation for Trainees—We have continued building our online lectures and primers database. We also work closely with the residency program to ensure residents have broad exposure to neuraxial anesthesia, nasal fiber optic intubation, beach chair cases, trauma, complex spine, and orthopedic oncology.
