Mass Eye and Ear Sets Standards of Transparency and Accountability in Ophthalmology

Biography
Laurel Tainsh, MD, MHS, is a member of the Comprehensive Ophthalmology Service, specializing in cataract surgery and general eye care. Dr. Tainsh earned a BA in History from Harvard College. After graduation, she joined a laboratory at Massachusetts General Hospital, where she worked under the mentorship of Emmanuel S. Buys, PhD, studying a novel mouse model of open-angle glaucoma. She went on to earn her MD and MHS degrees from Yale University. During medical school, she worked as a histology teaching assistant and volunteered with Sight Savers—a student group that provides free glaucoma screenings to underserved patient populations. She also received a National Institutes of Health fellowship to develop a co-culture model of stem cell-derived retinal pigment epithelium and retinal progenitor cells on a novel biodegradable scaffold. Throughout her academic career, Dr. Tainsh has received several awards, including the Norma Bailey Bernicker Prize, the Campbell Prize, and the Farr Scholar Award for excellence in medical student research.
In July 2018, Dr. Tainsh joined the Harvard Medical School Ophthalmology Residency Training Program. During her residency, she published clinical case reports and an analysis of healthcare pricing.
