Functional MRI of Locus Coeruleus Might Detect Risk of Alzheimer's Disease
Massachusetts General Hospital researchers have associated lower novelty-related locus coeruleus (LC) function with steeper amyloid-related cognitive decline in clinically normal older adults, suggesting functional MRI of the LC might distinguish between individuals at risk of vs. resistant to Alzheimer's disease.

Prokopis C. Prokopiou, PhD, is a research fellow in the Gordon Center for Medical Imaging at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Prokopiou’s current main interests are focused on elucidating the origin of Tau pathology in the brain using PET and high field MRI. Dr. Prokopiou is also interested in understanding the underlying mechanisms of neurovascular coupling and the influence of physiology (arterial CO2, respiration, cardiac activity) on cerebral blood flow using multimodal neuroimaging measurements.
