Pathways Case Record: A Patient With Arteriovenous Malformations
A 68-year-old man with atrial fibrillation and recurrent melena was admitted with multiple episodes of dark, tarry stool and anemia. He was found to have small bowel arteriovenous malformations (AVMs). The Pathways Consult Service at Mass General investigated the etiology of this patient's gastrointestinal AVMs.

CAD Prevalent in Patients With Type 2 MI but Usually Non-obstructive
Cian P. McCarthy, MBBCh, BAO, SM, James L. Januzzi, Jr., MD, and colleagues found in a prospective study that coronary artery disease affected 92% of patients with type 2 myocardial infarction, but despite a large overall burden of coronary plaque, 74% did not have hemodynamically significant focal stenosis.

Pathways Case Record: A Case on Post-Splenectomy Persistent Thromboembolism
The Pathways Service investigated the case of patient with a past medical history of a truck collision 15 years prior that led to multiple orthopedic surgeries of his extremities and a traumatic splenectomy. He has since formed and maintained persistent thrombi and pulmonary embolisms despite being on anticoagulants.

Pathways Case Record: An Immunocompetent Patient With Disseminated CMV
A 49-year-old male presented to Massachusetts General Hospital, found to have new heart failure with a reduced ejection fraction and pericardial effusion. Testing revealed elevated cytomegalovirus (CMV) viral load, so the Pathways Service investigated how a previously immunocompetent patient developed CMV reactivation.
